IronCutter Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass

When performance matters in your lawn, try Australia’s newest breed of Turf, IronCutter Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass.

IronCutter was bred in the United States and has performed exceptionally well in the United States National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP), outperforming similar hybrid bermudagrass varieties.

IronCutter was brought to Australia by TurfBreed in March 2021 as a new choice within the Australian turf market with exceptional qualities for homeowners and commercial operations.

In this guide, we’ll explore IronCutter’s key features, along with best planting times, maintenance tips and how to protect against pests and disease.

IronCutter Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass Key Features

IronCutter’s array of features, from high drought tolerance to its soft touch underfoot and rich green appearance from the tropics to the cooler climate around the country, make it a top choice for Australian lawns.

TurfBreed’s Business Development Manager, Nathan Tovey, has more than 25 years of experience in the industry, and says IronCutter is gaining attention for its “phenomenal performance and good looks”.

IronCutter is both aesthetic and practical,” Nathan said. “It has a rich, deep green colour, has a lower need for fertiliser and a lower thatch when compared with other Bermuda varieties. This is a turf with low input cost and at the same time very high reward.”

IronCutter key features include:

  • High drought tolerance
  • High wear tolerance
  • Deepest green colour of all the Hybrid Bermudagrasses
  • Early spring green-up
  • High cold tolerance
  • Low thatch, resulting in lower maintenance
  • Extensive root structure providing great wearability and recovery
  • Soft to the touch and underfoot
  • Low seed head (a common irritant for people with allergies)

High Drought Tolerance

IronCutter is well suited to the Australian climate, and once established is more drought tolerant compared to other turf species. While it’s essential to water all lawns, especially during establishment, IronCutter can require less water once established, making it an eco-friendly choice for regions with water restrictions. Ideal watering schedules involve deep but infrequent watering to encourage deep root growth.

High Wear Tolerance

IronCutter’s high wear tolerance makes it a resilient choice for lawns. This feature is particularly beneficial for families with pets and children. Nathan says that while the turf is robust against wear, it is not a harsh turf.

This is a really lovely, soft turf and one that’s enjoyable to spend time on.”

High Cold Tolerance

While dry conditions are common throughout the country, Australia’s diverse climate also includes regions with cooler temperatures. IronCutter is well-suited for these areas, with an impressive tolerance for cold weather, with the ability to withstand frost and cooler conditions with an early spring green up in regions that experience frosts.

Produces Low Seed Head

The low seed head production of IronCutter is a game-changer for individuals with allergies. “The low seed head count minimises the common irritants that can trigger allergic reactions,” Nathan says.

It allows everyone to enjoy the beauty of a green lawn without the worry.”

This low seed head production also benefits family pets, as they can be irritated and even injured by grass seeds.

Best Planting Time

Establishing grass successfully is all about timing. IronCutter® Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass can be planted year-round in the warmer regions and ideally during spring or early summer when temperatures are warm in the cooler regions so the grass can establish quickly. IronCutter is well-suited for the majority regions in Australia, thriving in full sunlight. However, avoid planting during extreme heat waves or cold snaps.

Note: IronCutter is a sterile variety and is not available as seed.

IronCutter Elite Hybrid Bermudagrass Lawn Care

Mowing

IronCutter is known for its vertical and dense growth habit providing an aesthetically pleasing lawn, with a lower thatch making mowing a dream. IronCutter for the domestic user provides the flexibility to be mown with a traditional rotary mower at 15mm to 30mm height or for the lawn fanatic with a cylinder mower down to 5mm. For best results, aim to mow when the grass is dry and adjust the height of the mower based on the season.

Watering Your Lawn

Proper watering is the key to a healthy IronCutter lawn. Once established, water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Adjust the watering schedule based on the season. In warmer months, increase watering frequency, and reduce it during winter. Always water early in the morning to minimise evaporation.

Fertilising

Fertilising IronCutter lawn ensures it receives the necessary nutrients for optimal growth. We recommend fertilising during the growing season, with spring and early summer being ideal times for application.

While there a number of fertilisers that are well-suited to IronCutter, Nathan recommends LawnPride Turfmaxx to achieve a thriving lawn.

Weed Control

Maintaining a weed-free lawn enhances the overall health and appearance of IronCutter turf. While IronCutter has natural resistance to many pests and diseases, weed control remains essential. We recommend using one of myhomeTURF’s herbicides for effective weed control measures suitable for IronCutter. Regular weeding and proper herbicide application will help keep lawn pristine.

Pests & Diseases

While IronCutter displays resistance to many pests and diseases, it’s essential to stay vigilant. Monitor the lawn regularly for signs of stress or discoloration, which may indicate a potential issue. If pests or diseases are detected, take prompt action using suitable remedies.
