For sun and shade tolerance, Prestige Buffalo will tolerate up to 70% shade with low wear, and up to 50% shade with moderate to high wear.

This strain of Buffalo sees Prestige turf being the coldest and drought tolerant variety when compared to other grasses.

Shade tolerance

Prestige Buffalo grass works in full to moderately heavy shade conditions and will tolerate up to 70% shade conditions.

Three to four hours minimum of sunlight each day is recommended for your Prestige turf, at an absolute minimum it must have at least two hours of sun a day.

Drought and cold tolerance

As Prestige turf has a large, deep rooted system it is an efficient water user and stays green longer in dry conditions.

For this same reason, Prestige is able to cope with cold and stay green in winter.

Prestige Buffalo is considered drought tolerant as all warm season grasses are, however, all warm season grasses may brown-off in drought if not watered when the leaves start to wilt.

If there is a long period of drought, Prestige turf will need watering to survive. Try not to leave the lawn brown from drought stress for more than 1 week if possible, as it will take longer to come back.

Less thatch

Prestige turf is a low thatch variety which means the lawn is less spongy and therefore much healthier.

When lawns have a high build-up of thatch, new roots may not penetrate as deeply into the soil, making the turf less tolerant of hot and cold conditions – this is not an issue with Prestige Buffalo.

Over a long period of time Prestige Buffalo can still get thatch, particularly if mown very tall or left too long between mowing.

However, Prestige turf will produce less thatch compared to other Buffalo varieties and can be dethatched if needed.

Mowing a Prestige Lawn

It is important you mow your prestige lawn at the correct height.

It is recommended that you cut your Prestige Buffalo to 35mm – 45mm in sun and in shade, 50mm -60mm.

Mow your Prestige turf every 7-10 days in warmer months and every 3 – 6 weeks in colder months.

Watering a Prestige Lawn

Proper watering immediately after installation will ensure your Prestige Buffalo becomes well established.

Begin watering your new Prestige Turf within a half hour after it is laid and apply 2 to 3cm of water so that the soil beneath the lawn is very wet.

Ideally the soil 7 to 10cm below the surface of the Prestige Buffalo turf should be moist, if not, you need to apply more water.

For the next two weeks, keep the soil below the Prestige turf moist with daily (or more frequent) watering, especially during hot, dry periods.

As the Prestige turf establishes its new roots into the soil you can check the moisture depth with a screwdriver or sharp tool by pushing it into the grass. If it is hard to push the screwdriver into the Prestige turf, then it requires water.

Once the root system of the Prestige Buffalo has been established water thoroughly only when needed – when a slight wilting is visible – usually every 7-10 days in summer (on sandy soils more often) and must less in cooler months.

Remember infrequent deep watering of your Prestige turf promotes a healthy lawn and a strong deep root system.

Watering time is best in the early morning.

Fertilising a Prestige Lawn

Prestige Buffalo grass needs to be feed to remain strong and healthy. After laying it is important to use a slow release fertiliser (once a month).

Once established, use a complete fertiliser on your Prestige turf in early April and early September.  At other times of the year use a slow release fertiliser.

If you need a quick green-up of your Prestige turf, then use a fertiliser high in nitrogen to promote a lush green lawn.

In the heat of summer avoid over fertilising your Prestige grass or using manure-based products.

Weed Control

Prestige Buffalo’s dense growth pattern makes it great at out-competing weeds.

However, if weeds infest your Prestige turf, hand eradicate before seed head develops or apply a suitable weedicide.

It is a good idea to always check your lawn regularly for weeds.

Pest Control for a Prestige Lawn
